Directed by Ang Lee (”Sense and Sensibility”), this 1999 Civil War drama marks the acting debut of singer-poet Jewel. She plays a pregnant widow who becomes involved with a young soldier (Tobey Maguire, “The Cider House Rules”), though their involvement could have a tragic end. Skeet Ulrich and Jeffrey Wright co-star.
