Nothing against Fantasia; she’s a lovely, talented young woman whose story, despite the title of this biodrama, has “Cinderella” written all over it. She was a poor, illiterate single mom and sexual abuse survivor whose singing voice caught the ear of a fairy godmother called “American Idol.” Great story, for sure, but it’s more than a bit jarring to see Fantasia playing herself in a dramatization of her own life. The producers would have been better off making this a documentary — or waiting about 30 years and having an actress play the role.
