The Phantom of the Opera – 8:00 PM ET, TCM

Andrew Lloyd Webber, eat your heart out. The 2004 film version of the stage musical was lovely, but nobody could play tortured, disfigured characters like Lon Chaney. He’s brilliant in this 1925 silent adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel about a mad, physically grotesque composer smitten with a lovely young singer (Mary Philbin). Touches of color and sound were added to the film in 1930, but neither detracts from Chaney’s powerful performance.
